ABOUT PAULINE

Influences

Pauline has many influences for her work but she is particularly interested in the work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Finding their use of symbolism, hidden meaning, rich colour and fine detail areas which she would like to emulate in her work. A recent trip to Italy to view Renaissance art and artchitectue has given Pauline new ideas for compositions and layouts.

Inspirations for painting:

Pauline was selected for the Japan Foundation Secondary School Teachers’ Study Tour of Japan in 1999 and decided to develop a series of paintings which had a distinct oriental feel. She incorporated images and scenes from Japan enclosing them within shapes of ginger jars, teapots, pagodas, etc to make unusual compositions. At this time she created many Japanese-themed still-life paintings which had intricate designed fabric, delicate patterned crockery and objects brought back from her travels to Japan.

More recent work, although similar in style to the oriental themed work, includes subjects closer to home relating to her love of her home city of Dundee.  Inspiration comes from her childhood memories, family history, the history of Dundee, architecture, songs and stories about Dundee. Pauline researchers Dundee’s history and explores the vernacular architecture combining them to create imaginative and interestingly painted compositions. Lately, she has included a crossover from Italian Renaissance art with intention to include the illusion of a frame around the images, developed using details from decorative architecture to create and rotate around the design of the imitation frame, encourage the viewer to focus on the narrative enclosed within and not to take the paintings at face value.
